Apple picking

Where: Sunny Hawkes Bay on an orchard conveniently located between Napier and Hastings, 5 minutes from Taradale.

The orchard: Kilhaven is a family operated orchard with 40 hectares of apples and pears run by brothers Philip and Stuart. For more info see our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/kilhaven. The orchard is part of the Mt Erin Group of growers www.mterinapples.co.nz who take pride in selling premium quality apples around the world.

The job description: Picking work is available from February  to end of April and requires workers to carefully select and pick fruit at the optimum maturity with fruit from each tree harvested multiple times over the course of two weeks. Workers will be trained in all aspects of the task so no experience is necessary. Work can be demanding working at heights either on ladders or platforms and generally requires workers to fill and carry bags filled with harvested fruit.

The perks: Although physically demanding some work will be done on a self-driving platform taking away the need for ladders and picking bags. The government are paying a $1000 bonus for completing 6 weeks of picking work and $200 per week towards accommodation.

The person: We are looking for anyone wanting an outdoor experience to earn potential $$$ over summer or someone looking for a taste of an orchard career to see if it is for them. The work can be physically demanding shifting ladders, working at heights on ladders, carrying bags full of apples and in the heat of the day so workers must be physically able.

Work requirements: Valid visa, NZ bank account and IRD number.

Rates and hours: Minimum of $21.10 per hour but we pay bin rates so potential earnings of $30 per hour or more for those with experience or capable and willing. Work is generally 6 days a week for picking. Weekly hours can sometimes be dependent on weather and fruit readiness. Accommodation is available on-site at a reasonable rate for those that need it.
